The whole commune possesses over 2000 hectares of melia azedarach forests that are concentrated in hamlets Na Mu, Ban Da and Ban Lan, as well as more than 1.000 hectares of bamboo grown in the hamlets of Na La, Phia Trang and Na Con.
Local people in Na La Hamlet, Son Phu Commune, Na Hang District, have developed their economy by planting “bat do” bamboo shoots.
Meanwhile, Na Hang Hamlet is considered to be the metropolis of “bat do” bamboo (a domestic bamboo variety) in the commune, with over 300 hectares. When cropped, fresh bamboo shoots can be sold at between VND5,000 and VND7,000 per kilogramme. After the crop of bamboo shoots, old bamboo trees are also purchased by Na Hang Paper Company and construction project owners.
Currently, the consumption markets for indigenous-tree-products are mainly in Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Hai Phong and Hung Yen Provinces. Normally, 1 hectare of melia azedarach produces 70 m3 of timber, which can be sold at VND2 million per m3. Therefore, local people can earn an annually income of more than VND300 million, while collecting VND100 million per year in profit from “bat do” bamboo.
The enhancement of indigenous tree species has created leapfrogs in economic development and poverty alleviation in Son Phu Commune as well as contributed to improving locals’ incomes and raising their awareness and responsibility for forest protection.
